All-Night

Whoa Nellie! I did NOT see that coming!

This past weekend was the annual NorCal District NYI All-Nighter. I’ve taken the responsibility of planning this event for the past two years and I’ll be the first to admit that it is a lot of work! Planning and making sure that you are within a certain budget while still having a great event is no simple task and not for the faint of heart.

See any fool can plan a fun event that costs a ton of money. It takes a master (much like myself) to plan an event on the cheap that is still AH-Mazing!

I kid, I kid! I’ve been having fun with this because this event went off in the most incredible way! While planning for it I was telling vendors that we were expecting somewhere around 150-175 participants (that’s code for 200 if you’ve ever planned an event). And at that point I was really excited because in my mind I thought, “Wow, we haven’t had this kind of response for a while now. This event will be super neat-o.”

Then the event actually happened…

And large trucks, vans, cars and buses started to dump students all over our host church in San Jose (thank you again Cambrian Park). As they started to arrive I knew that we were going to have an incredible turn-out. Periodically, I checked the registration table and made sure that I knew how our numbers were progressing. I knew that there were more people than we had registered but our number of registered people was high… like 208 high!

We went with that number and took off to the first event. We purchased 208 arm bands and quickly discovered that those would not be enough. I had to go get pizza (which is an entire story in itself) so I never did hear how many participants we had. Off to the second venue our reported number had risen because more folk had joined the party. While we were at the ice skating rink we had a great time but soon it was time to move on to the final venue.

It was at a bowling alley that we were in for the surprise of our lives. The bowling alley required a sign in from each participant that walked through the door. And being the good leader that I am I worked hard to get our participants into an orderly and calm line. Naturally, I was the last one through the door and my only question was, “How many do we have?” The response was slightly abstract since I didn’t have a frame of reference of how many names were on each sheet of paper. The response was, “I’ve got ten sheets of paper.” Now you can take that how you will, but ten sheets of paper with name on it seems like a big number.

You want to know how many names were on each sheet?

30

We had over T.H.R.E.E.H.U.N.D.R.E.D participants at the All-Nighter.

The final count was 320! And that, my friends is CRAZY!!!

Last year was one of the largest turnouts for a district All-Nighter in a while and we had maybe… MAYBE 150 participants.

Anyhow it turned out to be a great night and it could be a great point of traction for fellowship in our area. But as any good farmer with a bumper crop knows, don’t get too excited about big numbers because they might not last! But enough of that kind of talk…

Woohoo! Awesome!

Going to the Game

It’s the last week of the season and we are on our way to the ballgame. Giants are up by one game at this point so their destiny is in their hands. Win some games!

BART is always a fun way to ride into the city. Today in particular has been pretty comical. It has been hot in the Bay Area… like 100 degrees hot lately and so BART cars are notoriously similar to Easy Bake Ovens when the a/c isn’t working. Thankfully, the a/c in the car I’m in is working. And thankfully, (again for me) the car in front of us is not.

I’ve been laughing at the reactions of people moving out of that car and into ours. You would think that they were just feeling the cooling relief of acid being washed off their bodies as they walk from hot to cool. Everyone that walks through the doors gives an audible sigh of relief accompanied with a comment about how much better this car is from the last. Apparently no one is trying to cut weight!

Needless to say, this car has filled up with all sorts of folks. The young guys with their cell phone rap blaring, the homeless folks sleeping in the corner, Giants fans heading to the game just like my Dad and I, tattoo’d bodies showing off their artwork because of the warmth today and all the other array of people going into the City.

It’s a beautiful day and a good day to make it in for a ballgame. Let’s go Giants! Seal the deal!

Heading into the City

I’m riding BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) into the City (San Francisco) to have dinner with my family. I’ve got an aunt and uncle that are in the area from Oklahoma and so we’re getting the California Clan together to share a meal.

Texting is great but sometimes I miss the voice behind the words I read. I just finished talking to my wife about what we could do while we wait for everyone else. She works in the City and so instead of her riding home just to turn around, or have her wait for everyone to get there (dinners at 6;00) I will come in and together we usually hang out.

I’m not a big fan of malls but there is one by her BART station, there is also a million places that are available to us if we don’t feel like doing the mall thing (which I never do!). Well the conversation apparently went south over texts and from what I can gather, Ashley is really mad at me. I just wanted to do something other than go to the mall.

Anyhow, the warning to everyone is this: Be mindful of your tone and voice over texts. You never know when they’ll be heard the wrong way! Sorry Ash, I guess I’ll have to make it up to you somehow… Hmmm.

Testing, Testing 1,2,1,2

I’m doing a quick test of mobile posting. I’d like to be able to do some of this when I’m out and about and the WordPress app might just help me.

I am sitting in my bed (with my laptop on my lap) typing on the keyboard of my BB to see how this works out. There is a humming bird buzzing the window and the sound of its wings beating back and forth is pretty intense.
